The mystery of Whitney Houstons death

Whitney Houston talking to the audience before...Whitney Houston talking to the audience before proceeding to perform "Saving All My Love for You" during the HBO-televised concert "Welcome Home Heroes with Whitney Houston" honoring the troops, who took part in Operation Desert Storm, their families, and military and government dignitaries. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)There have been rumors circulating and many fans of the late singer have questioned the coroners findings with regards to what exactly killed Whitney. Many forums discussing her death seem to have fans in confusion about how she could have drowned from Cocaine, stating that Cocaine doesn't make a user drowsy.
Here's some interesting things to consider:
Cocaine if taken in small doses will not necessarily make one hyperactive and super alert but can induce calmness. If Houston had take a small amount prior to bathing it may, along with the other sedative like substances may have made her drowsy.

Cocaine, depending on how it is taken will remain in the body for different amounts of time. We do not know when the Cocaine was taken by Ms. Houston. The coroner said just prior to her drowning.

Cocaine can cause sudden death, by constricting the blood vessels in the heart. If one has blocked arteries and experiences rapid palpitations caused by the Cocaine,  the heart can suddenly stop or slow down and cause unconsciousness. Ms. Houston reportedly had 60 percent narrowing of her arteries.

Ms. Houston may not have had the strength or may have been unconscious but still breathing when she slipped beneath the surface of the water when her heart started going into cardiac arrest. (These are just theories)

Here are some concerns and questions:

How long was Ms. Houston alone in the bathroom?

Why did her staff forbid her to take baths? I suspect she has had a near drowning event before, perhaps from the same drugs.

Some reports indicate Ms. Houston was found face down. She may have tried to pull herself up and out of the tub, but lost consciousness doing so, slumping forward..

Ms. Houston did have Cocaine in her system, who knew, who bought it for her, who sold it to her? Most addicts can not hide an addiction for long from those around her and many famous addicts have someone to purchase or secure their drugs for them.

Did Ms. Houston do the drugs somewhere else? There was no sign of the drug in her home at the time of her death.

Why was Ms. Houston not still in treatment? She had other drugs in her system, which may have been legal but this does not mean she as an addicted was supposed to be on them.

What the reader must take away from this death
Ms. Houston was clearly still an addict, not in recovery. She ultimately died as a result of a relapse assuming she had been sober at all since her last treatment. She may have rolled the dice one time too many, as most addicts that have been in treatment are well educated as to what drugs can and will do to them on any given day. Addicts are told any amount is a no no, any drug is a no no.

She was well informed. She was an addict that needed to be in treatment, not going to Grammy Awards. She was a singer in trouble, and it is hard to believe, her boyfriend, staff and family members were unaware of her still using. Very hard to believe. A long time addict remains under suspicion for a long time by their family, friends and loved ones. They become well schooled in what signs to look for and will always be keenly observant of any changes in their behavior.

Ms. Houston should not have been having alcohol, or marijuana. Most addicts use secondary drugs to heighten the high experienced by their primary drug of choice since it takes more and more of the addictive drug to give them the same high. Many couple up their drug usage with alcohol and marijuana, and prescription medicines for this purposed.

Many will say it is no one's fault but the singers, but truthfully speaking, she was still an addict, and those around her that knew it can share in the blame for not seeking help for her. After all, addicts rarely seek help for themselves. The best way to help an addict is not to hide their secret from everyone, but to bring it to light so it can no longer hide them, from their problem.

SC middle school students selling drugs on school premises

I Need DrugsImage via Wikipedia
Reports filed at Rock Hill Police Department indicate that several middle school students were involved in the sale and distribution of known narcotics on school grounds. A 14 year old student was seen selling the white powdery contents inside the restroom of Rawlinson Road Middle School. The incident was witnessed by another student who in turn reported the act to a teacher at the school. The teacher promptly confronted the student, and it was determined that the student did attempt to sell an illegal substance. The student in question had on his person a bag filled with a white substance that tested positive as Cocaine.
This is one of several recent reports going on at the middle school level for attempts of distributing drugs either illegal, or prescribed. Everything from birth control to alcohol have been distributed and sold in schools throughout the state. Schools are recommending parents regularly inventory their medicine cabinets, and keep all prescription medicines in a locked place within the home. Students caught in the recent drug selling, will be headed to family court.
The dangers of some of these drugs legal and illegal getting into the wrong hands and being taken are tremendous. Prescription drugs in the wrong hands can be just as lethal as street drugs, depending on the amount taken and by who. What many young people need to realize is taking any medicine that isn't prescribed for them can cause anything from a severe and deadly allergic reaction to any number of health issues. These recent reports further illustrate how important anti-drug education is at the middle schools today. More needs to be done, as these reports show, not enough has been done.

Cocaine statistics

Shipment of cocaine bricks confiscated by the ...Image via Wikipedia

Cocaine Statistics

Cocaine is one of the most addictive and dangerous drugs a user can run across during their lifetime. The reasons are numerous, but the most prevalent would be these statistics below?
  • 1 of 4 Americans of the age range 26-34 reportedly have already taken drugs.
  • Certain drug prevention resource centers report that around 5,000 adults in America take Cocaine for the first time every day.
  • Statistical reports show that around 25 million people have taken Cocaine at least once in their life time. Additional collected various data suggest that there are more than two million cocaine-addicts in the United States.
  • Known data suggests that a large amount of cocaine can still be detected anywhere from two to three weeks after use, if the addict does not die from the initial dose.
  • More than half of all emergency room visits are linked to Cocaine overdose.
  • The number of Cocaine addicts grows at a rate of 60,000 new cases yearly.
  • The percentage of drug-users among students over the past 5 years has increased from 2% in the mid 1990's to almost 5% five years later.
  • Over 8% of high school students questioned in the early 2000's, revealed that they have already taken Cocaine.
  • Men are twice as likely to take Cocaine as women, however these statistics may not include those females in prostitution. The National Drug Control Policy reports that the amount of constant Cocaine addicts is well over 3 million people.
  • Young adults between the ages of 18 to 25 are the fastest growing age group using and /or addicted to Cocaine
  • The percentage of people who have taken Marijuana before using Cocaine is 90% which is one of the reasons why legalization of Marijuana is up against daunting odds.

Tips on getting through to an addict

Dead in NYImage by NYCArthur via Flickr First and foremost, getting through to an addict probably will take more than just your efforts alone to accomplish. An addict can not be reasoned with , and there is no way to “win” an argument with a full blown addict either. Their reasoning is skewed by their addictions, and your reasoning will fall on deaf ears.
This is why so many arguments with an addict yield little benefit to either party. If anything it could spark violence which is another side effect of the disease.

1. There’s strength in numbers- there is a reason professionally assisted interventions work, and that is because an addict has to visually see the impact and pain they have caused, and in some instances there are very important things an addict needs to hear. It may be phrases like “I’m sorry” or “I love you.” Having a professional there to help guide the family and keep everyone focused on the ultimate goal is where the success lies. Get help with your intervention, many family interventions fail because emotions cloud the process and many times the addict will gain the upper hand by using emotional manipulation.

2. Stick to your consequences- Don’t say what you wont or will do as a consequence to an addict unless you mean it. They can see and sense the lack of conviction you have and if you have to have firm resolve. If you make idle threats they will fall on deaf ears. If you’ve made threats in the past and failed to carry them through then don’t expect them to suddenly work now. Words are lost on an addict, real firm consequences that you make stick will say it all.

3. Know the reality of your situation- You aren’t doing yourself or your addicted loved one any favors by staying in a constant state of denial or downplaying their significance and grave danger they are in. Every day that you give support, food, shelter, or money to an addict is a day that you are escorting them to their grave. With addiction, there IS NO TOMORROW. Tomorrow could mean the end. Drugs like Heroin , Cocaine, and Meth can kill an addict at any given time with out warning, addicts do not build up a tolerance to death. That means get help now. Today may be your last chance to save their life and tomorrow may be robbed from you in an instant. If love would be the single factor in getting an addict to quit, there’d be no addicts. Your love can’t make them stop, nor can their love for you make them stop. Sadly an addict becomes blind to love, as their need to feed the addiction grows, their craving for the drugs or alcohol is the most powerful motivating factor. The sober loved one is buried deep within, and is trapped inside begging for sobriety, your love has to be in the actions you take, not in affection or words or financial help.

4. Regain control- Many times you find yourself losing the grasp of the situation with an addicted loved one. Just when you think you’ve made a difference you discover that you have been made a fool of. Gain control of the situation by making sure you are not contributing to the problem. Make sure you do not fall for the manipulations that will be thrown your way. Addicts use guilt, past mistakes, pity and even physical intimidation to get you to succumb to their wants. If your addicted loved one is doing this, it is time to make your move. Contact your local drug rehab programs and get the guidance and help you need. If you have to call the police. A night in jail is a lot better than a night in the morgue. At least you get out of jail.

5. Stop blaming yourself- The longer you blame yourself the more time you waste in making the right decisions for yourself or your loved one. Blame is best overcome when you take positive action in getting the addict off of the drugs and substances that are killing them. We can’t go back and change the past, all we can do is move forward, onward, and upward. No matter what you blame yourself for, it will pale in comparison to the guilt you feel when it is too late.

6. Be prepared to walk away- Sometimes the only way to survive an addicted loved one is when you have to say this is it. This means handing the problem back to the addict and you walking away. It may seem like something you could never do, but there are support groups out there to turn to that can give you the tools and strength you need to stand again and be happy, whether the addict gets sober or not. Two lives can’t perish because of one. That is the ultimate success of addiction, to take as many lives down as possible. Now when it is a child, we can’t “walk away” but we can keep placing them into treatment, and making sure they face the consequences for their actions. If it means jail time, do it. Drug use, buying and selling are all illegal activities. If all else fails, contact your local police department for some advisement in this area. Some police departments have their own “scared straight “ programs that may be just the wake up call your minor may need to snap them into reality.

Questions from our readers: How many rocks of crack cocaine do addicts usually smoke?

Answer: They will smoke as many rocks of crack as they can get. I know this seems a simple answer but an addict is not defined as one that can control their urges, but just the opposite. So if crack addicts has one rock or 10 he will smoke them all. If the addict smokes a rock, and knows he has more he will continue until there is none left. This is the addiction.

Chris Farley, a talent lost to addiction

Chris Farley was best known as the loveable and large funny man on Saturday Night Live. However, many were unaware of the addictions that he struggled with and many tabloids focused a great deal of attention on the funnyman's weight instead of the most dire problems he had with addiction.

Sadly, Chris Farley succumbed to his addictions and was found dead in his Chicago apartment on December 18, 1997. An autopsy revealed that Farley had died of an accidental overdose of cocaine and heroin . For those wondering how big of a dose of cocaine or heroin does it take to cause death, the answer is simple, the next dose you take.

Questions on Crack Cocaine

Cooking Crack in a Spoon with Sodium BicarbonateImage via Wikipedia

Crack Cocaine addict has reached epic proportions all over the world. If you live in Orangeburg, or any county in this state, the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services (Click Here) is responsible for general health and addiction services in this state, and may also have information on problem gambling

1. How often do crack addicts smoke crack?

Crack addicts will smoke crack as often as they can. That may seem like an over simplified answer, but it is the truth. As long as an addict has crack he/she will smoke it until there is no more left. So the real answer is, every time they have crack they will smoke it. If they have the means to purchase it every hour they will smoke it every hour, if they have the means to obtain it every day, they will smoke it every day. As long as they have it in their possession, they will continue to smoke all of it. There is no "saving some for later" with a full blown addict of crack.

2. Do people who smoke crack have abnormal personalities?

That is a difficult question to answer, if you mean does their personality become abnormal as a result of using crack, then the answer is, yes. Crack does have the capacity to take any person and literally convert them into a stranger, even to those who have known and loved the addict their whole life. Because the addict is now driven day and night by an urge he/she can no longer control, their mind is incapable of staying stable and rational. They may become severely agitated, paranoid and violent towards anyone, including their own loved ones and friends. If you mean do people with abnormal personalities smoke crack to begin with, well, crack has infiltrated families and taken hostage many a "normal" person. However, that being said, there are certain predispositions that experts claim are hereditary that makes a person more prone to become an addicted person. It has been argued that it isn't a genetic factor as much as it is an environmental conditioning of the addict that causes them to be prone to become addicted. The environmental conditioning argument suggests that the addict has perhaps grown up seeing substance abuse within the family, and because this is a familiar behavior to them they do not see it as the problem it is. This same argument has been made with childhood obesity, its the familiar behavior that the child mimics, over eating, and regular fast food meals is a behavior, not a disease, with overweight being the symptom of the behavior. The same is said for the addict, they grew up seeing substance abuse, and the behavior is mimicked. This type of environmental pre-conditioning occurs all over the world and also is at fault for domestic abuse as well.

3.  Can smoking crack cocaine put you at risk for HIV ?

People who smoke crack cocaine are at increased risk of becoming infected       with HIV — a finding that highlights the need to adopt and to evaluate the use of safe inhalation rooms and safer crack kits, B.C. researchers say. Some of the reasons for this risk is the users impaired ability to rationally make safe decisions, as well as participating in risky behavior to obtain money for their habit, such as engaging in sexual conduct.

4. Is constipation a side effect of Cocaine?

Yes, constipation is a side effect of Cocaine use. Not only does it cause constipation, it causes intestinal damage, nerve damage, seizures, hallucinations, increased heart rate, blood pressure, constricted blood vessels, paranoia, insomnia, violent behavior that is extreme enough to cause an addict to kill, and death.

Are Heroin and Cocaine in the same family?

Chemical structure of cocaineImage via WikipediaHeroin is a depressant drug, with the chemical name, (diacetylmorphine), also known as diamorphine, is a semi-synthetic opioid drug synthesized from morphine, a derivative of the opium poppy. As with other opioids, diacetylmorphine is used as both an analgesic and a recreational drug. Frequent and regular administration is associated with tolerance and physical dependence, which may develop into addiction.

Cocaine is a stimulant drug, with the chemical name, (benzoylmethylecgonine) which  is a crystalline tropane alkaloid that is obtained from the leaves of the coca plant. The name comes from "coca" in addition to the alkaloid suffix -ine, forming cocaine. It is a stimulant of the central nervous system, an appetite suppressant, and a topical anesthetic. Specifically, it is a serotonin–norepinephrine–dopamine re-uptake inhibitor, which mediates functionality of these neurotransmitters as an exogenous catecholamine transporter ligand. Because of the way it affects the mesolimbic reward pathway, cocaine is addictive.

Drugs that are depressant in nature like Heroin, usually have a sedative type of effect, while drugs that are stimulants like Cocaine, cause rapid heartbeat, and hyperactivity. Both of these drugs are derived in part from natural plant sources, which just goes to show that just because something is "natural" does not mean it is safe. Some of the most deadly chemical compositions occur naturally.

Top 5 addiction questions answered

Standard question markImage via Wikipedia

1. Has Heroin caused more deaths than auto accidents?

Answer:  Well that depends on how this question was intended, if  you mean do more people die from automobile accidents than Heroin, the answer is probably yes. However, to put this into proper perspective first consider this, a greater majority of the population drive cars, so the odds of there being more deaths due to automobile accidents would naturally be higher especially if you take into account also that it is rare that there are ever just one vehicle involved in vehicular accidents resulting in death. However, if there were the same number of Heroin users as there are car drivers, those numbers would probably sky rocket. That doesn't even factor in how many vehicular accidents that may have occurred from someone being high on Heroin.

2. Can using Heroin once kill you?
Answer:  Yes it can, especially if you overdose, which is not uncommon. Heroin can also cause a number of other health/side effects that can have a fatal attack on your system.
For instance, some people have underlying hidden heart problems they are unaware of that using Heroin, even once could cause death.

3. How can you get an addict help if they refuse?

Answer:  If you can not get an addict to accept help, The one thing you can do is refuse to enable their addiction any longer. This means cutting them off financially. No more rides, no more money, zip - zilch. If you find this particular action too hard to do, then you would need to get support for yourself so that you can learn to cut the ties of co dependency. There are various support groups that are specifically formed to deal with the family members of those who are addicted. They offer guidance, and support to help family members make the best decisions and start living for themselves again, whether the addict in their life is there or not. You can not always save an addict, but at some point  you certainly need to save yourself from the grip  they have on your life.

4. Can smoking crack cocaine put you at risk for HIV?
Answer:  People who smoke crack cocaine are at increased risk of becoming infected with HIV — a finding that highlights the need to adopt and to evaluate the use of safe inhalation rooms and safer crack kits, B.C. researchers say.  Some of the reasons for this risk is the users impaired ability to rationally make safe decisions, as well as participating in risky behavior to obtain money for their habit, such as engaging in sexual conduct.

5. Can you get Hepatitis from smoking crack cocaine?

Answer:  Smoking crack can lead to open sores, burns or cuts on the lips, which can transfer blood to a crack pipe. If the pipe is shared, even a speck of infected blood can transmit hepatitis C. Sharing means anything like borrowing, lending, passing on, buying, selling, reusing, receiving or taking any equipment that was used by someone else. Some people do not identify risk with the word “sharing” or when reusing involves a close sexual partner (like a boyfriend or girlfriend).

Cocaine Statistics

Shipment of cocaine bricks confiscated by the ...Image via Wikipedia
Cocaine Effects
Cocaine effects are extremely detrimental on the body and the consequences related to cocaine effects can eventually lead to permanent damage, addiction and death. While each person who uses this drug reacts to it differently, there are two distinct categories of cocaine effects: short-term effects and long-term effects. Even if a person has only used cocaine once, he/she can experience short-term cocaine effects. Long-term cocaine effects appear after increased periods of use and are dependent upon the duration of time and amount of cocaine that has been consumed.
 Cocaine Statistics
  • 1 of 4 surveyed Americans  ranging in age between  26-34 years of age,  have  taken drugs.
  • Minnesota Institute for Public Health and drug prevention resource center reports  that 5,000 adults in America take cocaine for the first time each day. (1985)
  • Current statistics show  that  between 22-25 million people have  taken cocaine at least one time in their life. Various data reports indicate that there are more than two million cocaine-users in America today.
  • In comparison with old estimates, a large amount of cocaine can still be subject to detection from 10 to 22 days after the use in the users system.
  • Over half of all emergency room visits are cocaine related.
  • Every year the number of cocaine addicts continues to grow. In 1975 the estimated  numbers were around  30,000.By 1986 it was estimated to be around 300,000 and to 361,000 in 2000.
  • The percent of drug-users among  students over the past 5 years  increased from 2% in 1994 to 4.8% in 2000.
  • 8.2% of  all  high school pupils surveyed in 2001 reported that they had taken cocaine.
  • Men take cocaine twice as often as women take it.
  • The amount of people, who have taken marijuana before using cocaine is 90%.
  • About 300,000 babies were born in 1988 with cocaine in their systems.

A Prick of a Needle, A Lifetime of Sting by D. Gagnon

Loving you used to feel so good, it was a drug of its own..
Now, I can't see you in your eyes, and  I'm all alone..
Loving you meant days to look forward to..
Now it only means hiding from you.
.
Loving you was something I could actually feel
Now love has gone numb, even though it's still real..
Loving you was long days of having you here
Now loving you means nothing but fear..
Loving you was seeing love in your eyes..
Now its all about a new love, a love that lies..
A prick of a needle, a lifetime of sting..
Was this the song you wanted to sing?
Did you need to leave me this way?
Did it take you where you wanted to go?
Now I'm alone looking down at your grave..
Where are you now, beneath that cold hard stone..
You could have told me you hated me..
You could have said you don't love me anymore..
I could have taken that over this you see?
So tell me, what was all of this for?
A prick of a needle, a lifetime of sting..
Was this the song you wanted to sing?
I hope you are now free of your pain,
but for me, this means a lifetime of rain...
And you can now lay and rest in peace..
While I go on, and cry over your memory.
.
You could have just stopped loving me..
That would have hurt less you see..
To lose you to something else, someone new
Was something I know I could get through..
But to lose you to this evil thing?
A prick of a needle, a lifetime of sting..
Was this the song you wanted to sing?
What was the power of what you did..
That sealed your fate under its lid..
Goodbye my lover, good bye my  friend..
I wish I could have saved you in the  end..
Your last walk here was a hard one..
As we  watched you come undone..
You had to have just one more hit..
and you just wasn't ready to quit..
A prick of a needle, a lifetime of sting..
Was this the song you wanted to sing?
Now you've  gone where I can't be
A life lost,  a real travesty..
This is what loving you became..
and now all I know is about the rain..
A prick of a needle, a lifetime of sting..
Was this the song you wanted to sing?
